美學:柔美與雄渾
[The Beautiful and the Sublime]

學分數:3
時   數:3
Neoplatonist philosophers thought of beauty as a metaphysical quality. Beauty, they said, is an element of the divine that shines through in the world (Longinus, Plotinus). By the eighteenth century, metaphysics came to be discounted in favor of more rational and commonsensical approaches and the question came to be how beauty could be defined. We will follow how, in definitions both objective and subjective, the beautiful came to be distinguished from the sublime (Burke, Kant, Schiller, Matthew Lewis’s The Monk). To Romantics and twentieth-century avant-garde artists, the sublime was by far the more interesting category (Wordsworth, Weiskel, Gerhart Hauptmann, “Flagman Thiel”), but for reasons we will investigate, a desire for the beautiful is reasserting itself. But how to return to beauty after two centuries of the sublime is proving a problem (Susan Stewart, Wendy Steiner, James Kirwan).

Special attention will be given to the theoretical reflections of Louis Marin, Roland Barthes, and Fredric Jameson.

How the novel gained prominence so quickly after the middle of the eighteenth century is the first question we will ask ourselves. We will look at the answers to this and related questions of two important scholars on this matter, Ian Watt (The Rise of the Novel, 1957) and J. Paul Hunter (Before novels, 1990). After that we will plunge into a reading of 6 to 7 novels by writers such as Defoe, Richardson, Fielding (both Henry and Sarah), Sterne, Burney. We’ll generally spend two weeks on a novel; the second week we will also read some additional secondary readings on the novel under discussion.

北美原住民生命書寫
[Native American Life Writing]

學分數:3
時    數:3
This seminar investigates traditions and innovation in Native American life writing, putting Native American concepts of self, life, language, and identities under scrutiny. We ask how the Native self is historicized and localized—defined by community and landscape—and how autobiography is related to history, focusing on critical works by Arnold Krupat, Gerald Vizenor, Hertha Wong, Kendall Johnson, and David Brumble, among others, who offer the most comprehensive and theoretical discussions of Native American self narratives. Selected primary readings range from oral and written collaborative (as-told-to) autobiography and pictography as autobiography to innovations of oral traditions by distinctive contemporary Native authors. With all this, we aim to interpret Native self narratives as “bicultural composite composition,” in Krupat’s words, “a ground on which two cultures meet,” “the textual equivalent of the frontier.”

We trace the tradition and innovation of North Native American novels from Native American Renaissance, which is usually regarded to have begun in 1968 with the publication of N.Scott Momaday’s House Made of Dawn, up to more recent publications to create a bond among different generations of Indian writers as well as to better interpret Indian tradition as a decidedly different experience of defining and naming themselves. The seminar is to concentrate on the hallmark writings of Momaday, Silko, Vizenor, Hogan, Sherman Alexie, Diane Glancy, and Thomas King. Primary readings will be supplemented by film-viewings and second critical references.
