(1) present an overview of the considerations involved in successful academic writing, 
(2) familiarize first-year graduate students with the style of English for academic purposes, 
(3) enhance students’ ability to write correct and fluent English,

(5) introduce some research methods commonly used in Applied Linguistics.

This course helps graduate students understand current theories of phonology, learn to analyze phonological data, and develop arguments for phonological analyses and descriptions. This course aims at familiarizing students with advanced concepts in the field of phonetics, the study of speech sounds. The main content will include: (a) acoustic properties of segments (i.e., consonants and vowels) and suprasegments (i.e., pitch, duration and intensity), and (b) how the acoustic properties are perceived and processed in human language. It is expected that students will be able to apply the concepts and techniques in phonetics to various studies in applied linguistics, e.g., speech perception, experimental phonology, and the interface between phonetics and other grammatical components.

[Comparative Syntax of Chinese and English]

This course aims to discuss and familiarize students with several issues in the syntax of English and Mandarin Chinese. The discussion is mainly based on the framework of generative grammar, though related topics that are tackled in other frameworks, such as in functionalism and typology, will be discussed as well.  Students are asked to read assigned articles analytically and develop linguistic argumentations.  The topics covered include: Word order typology , Subject and Topic , Binding Theory (Anaphors, Pronouns, R-expressions) , Passives. Movement issues, and Relative clauses.

[Second Language Phonology Acquisition]

L2 phonological Acquisition is a complex process with several mixed factors such as learners' L1 phonological system, universal grammar and target language. These factors will be discussed by reading updated literatures looking into various L2 phonological levels (including segments and prosodic aspects). In the meanwhile, since perception plays an important role for learners' processing L2 input, factors constraining L2 speech perception will also be discussed.

With an emphasis on second language learning theories and teaching principles, it introduces eight optimal conditions for the designs of foreign language teaching tasks of technology use (internet; software, computer applications, online learning platforms, other technologies, etc). Students will take a part in various foreign language classrooms of technology use, observe/explore how these classrooms address second language learning theories and teaching principles, develop materials for to technology-enhance language classrooms and learn to develop their own lessons. This course is intended to quickly bring students to a practical, introductory understanding of the statistical techniques commonly employed in the field of applied linguistics and help them function as informed and intelligent consumers of the applied linguistics research with a quantitative orientation. The techniques to be covered as they pertain to applied linguistics research include related samples and independent samples t-tests, correlation, regression, chi-square test of association, and ANOVA.

中英音韻對比分析
[Comparative Study of Chinese and English Phonology]

This course aims to familarize students with various phonological phenomena in English and Chinese, including their sound inventory, syllable structure, lexical prosody, metrical structure and intonation. The discussion is mainly based on the framework of generative grammar. The interaction of the two phonological systems will be introduced by reading papers concering code-switching, loanword and second language speech data. Students are required to conduct a mini-project and write a term paper to show their comprehension of the course materials and their ability of critical thinking and doing independent research.

This course aims to study the syntax, semantics/pragmatics, and prosody of information structure from the perspectives of the generative grammar and functional (discourse) grammar. Issues include how the notions of topic and focus are represented in the formal and discourse grammars and what discrepancies exist between the given/new and the topic/focus dichotomies. It is hoped that with more focused discussion of these related issues students can develop their critical thinking and linguistic argumentation.
