Abstract
The oceans provide essential goods and services to human life. I shall address a simple but imminent challenge to our future, that of food security. Today, humans get only 2% of all our food from the ocean. With the projected rise in the next thirty years of the world population from 7 to 10 billion people we will want to obtain more food from the ocean. However, ocean ecosystems are already stretched by overfishing, pollution and increasing acidification. What are the chances of overcoming these challenges, and how may we change human behavior in a sustainable way? In my talk I shall provide insights from a global study on future food from the ocean, which I am currently co-chairing for the European Union. Using food as an example I shall argue that we need greater collaboration between natural sciences and humanities to address the challenges of the Anthropocene – the age of humans as planetary agents.
