Course Description
This transpacific poetry-writing course will follow a workshop format:  after pondering examples and writing tactics for a given assignment in the “Poetry Workshop Course Reader” and assigned texts in poetry books, students will be asked to write a new poem which will be printed out and will become the basis for class performance, discussion, editing, and respectful critique along with the other assigned readings.  While we will study various voices and modes of writing from imagistic poems and traditional forms like ballads and haiku series to postmodern sonnet form, with particular attention paid to “transpacific” modes of poetry writing across the Asia Pacific region in the modern and postmodern eras, students will be asked to write five different poems in relation to what we read and discuss. After an initial discussion of imagistic, dialogical, formal, and various conceptual and experimental language strategies across the transpacific, we will move towards using “persona” tactics as well as “translational” personae tactics in writing, activating voices of otherness and projections of characters and situations beyond the ego-self in the poem, particularly as influenced by this or that side of Asia Pacific poetry and culture.
