In 324 CE, Constantine I (r. 306-337) chose Byzantium, a city that has been founded by Greek settlers in the 7th century BCE, as the site of Constantinople, his new capital. For more than a thousand years, the fate of Constantinople epitomised the ebb and flow of the Byzantine Empire. As the year 2024 marks the 1700th anniversary of Constantine I’s plan of founding Constantinople, the Taiwan Association of Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies (TACMRS) will be hosting a reading group on this city at National Chung-Hsing University, Taichung, on 23 March 2024. The discussion of texts will be led by Dr. Shih-Cong Fan Chiang (Kyle) (National Chung-Hsing University, Taiwan). This event is opened to college students (sophomore or above), scholars, and general public. You are warmly welcome to join us to re/discover Constantinople, and feel free to circulate this message among your colleagues and friends!
To register for the reading group, please access the registration form through the link below or scan the QR code with your mobile phone by 23 February 2024. The reading materials will be sent by email when the registration is closed.
